Testing for Radon is an important safety measure for homebuyers, that much we can agree on. We recently made a few improvements in ISN so it’s easier to set up reminders for Radon equipment pick-ups and drop-offs.
Prior to now, it was possible to set up SMS Events for Radon appointments, but it wasn’t easy. Here’s what’s new:
Before: Event triggers were based on inspection date and time. Therein lies the problem — Radon pickups and drop-offs often happen at different times than the actual inspection. As a result, it was difficult to set up SMS Events for Radon appointments that weren’t timed with the inspection itself.
New event triggers: We’re helping you set up better reminders for your team by providing you new triggers based on the Radon appointment dates and times noted on the order.
By using these triggers, you can better plan your team’s driving routes and help ensure they bring the required equipment with them (or bring it back to the office so it can be redeployed for other inspections).
How to enable SMS and emails for Radon appointments
If you haven’t already enabled the Radon system in your ISN account, follow the steps in this article first. Once complete, follow the tutorial below.
Setting up Radon SMS Events
- Navigate to Settings –> Office Settings –> Inspection and Fee Settings –> Radon Settings:
- Click “Add Radon SMS events,” which will add two events to your events page that are only customizable for Radon appointments. (Note: If you delete one of the two Radon SMS events you can revisit this page to add the missing event.)
- Edit the new events by going to “SMS Events” and look for the new events “Radon: Pick-up” and “Radon: Drop-off.” By default, the events are scheduled to send 1 hour before the pick-up and drop-off times and the person assigned to the order’s Radon appointments:
SMS Radon events are not as customizable as others, and these are the fields available:
- Name the SMS event: Enter a different name, if necessary (internal use only)
- These events are set to be sent to the Radon person responsible for the appointments. Both options are hardcoded the “drop-off” event and will look at the drop-off date and time while the pick-up one will look at the pick-up date and time.
- Customize the content, it already contains replacement values with important info for the person responsible. The drop-down beneath it lets you add more replacement values.
- *Note: the replacement value ‘%radon-contact-name%’ does not work for these events so you will not be able to share the contact for the appointment with the person responsible through the SMS message, but they will still be able to see who the contact for the appointment is when looking at the order info.
- When to send the SMS message, we recommend that you don’t change the “before” drop-down, if it’s changed to “after” then the SMS message will send “x” amount of time after the Radon appointment.
The options at the bottom can remain unchanged as these events will only be sent whenever a Radon appointment is added to the inspection order. Save your changes by clicking “Update SMS Event.”
How SMS Radon events look on orders
- When you create the Radon appointments you will set the person responsible for drop-off and pick-up:

After the inspection has been scheduled, you can see the new Radon events are ready to send 1 hour before each of the appointments:
